The Sun-Herald Surf Swim returned to picturesque Dee Why Beach on Sunday, March 18 with John De Mestre and Jessica Bayliss taking out the top spots for the men and women in the 1.5km event. Bayliss however was the surprise competitor among the pack taking out the top spot, among men and women, with a time of 19 minutes and 58 seconds.
The event, now in its second year, attracted more than 700 participants for the 1.5km and 750m swims.
In the 750m event, Lachlan Bruce was the first to cross the line in 9 minutes and 26 seconds, while Maya Anderson was the first woman across the line in 12 minutes and 50 seconds.
Fred Taylor, race director said: “In only the second year of this event, we have seen a great turn out with more than 700 people taking to the water today in the 1.5km and 750m swims. It was great to return to Dee Why Beach and in spite of the choppy conditions, the event was a huge success.”
The Surf Swim has already raised in excess of $12,000 for more than 600 charities, including the Dee Why Surf Life saving Club. The club, founded in 1912, has more than 750 members that span nippers, cadets, juniors, seniors, masters and socials.
